Because of the gold metallic watercolor, the appearance of this abstract landscape shifts as you look at it from a different angle and in different light. Southwest Landscape with Mesa is a gestural painting done literally with my eyes closed, having no idea what it would look like. When I viewed at it after painting it, there was clearly a mountainous southwest landscape with a mesa on the paper. I created this small gem in my Santa Fe studio after decades of living there in New Mexico. Mountains come out when I move my arm.
