Abstraction is nothing new or foreign to us. It’s inherent everywhere we look in nature: clouds in the sky, the aurora borealis, foam patterns on the ocean, murmurations of starlings, lichen on rocks, galaxies. We’re surrounded by abstraction. It’s just a matter of noticing it.

So abstraction is something natural and fitting for art. It’s not missing something, and it can be as filled with beauty and wonder as the environment around us, expressing the elements, the expanse of space, the tiny details that can be seen whenever we look closely.

When I look at my photos and paintings in my Instagram feed, I see similarities and patterns that show the influence of my vision and observations. I don’t consciously try to imitate these abstract patterns, but they emerge in my paintings anyway. I’m happy that my perception of beauty and sense of delight and wonder comes through in both photography and paintings that are filled with abstractions from nature.
