Nihonga painting uses traditional Japanese techniques with mostly non-toxic, ecological, natural materials:  mineral and oyster shell pigments, cochineal from insects, plant material like indigo, sumi ink, animal hide glue, and metal leafing on paper or silk.Because of my interest in Asian art, design, and meditative traditions and my strong connection to nature, this medium is a good fit for me. I was awarded the  2015 Tip Coleman Scholarship for the Nihonga and Beyond Workshop with Judith Kruger and began creating Nihonga paintings at the June 2015 workshop.

Light and Water: Spring Waterfalls. Mineral and oyster shell pigments, brass (imitiation goldleaf), and Japanese silverleaf on Kumohadamashi paper mounted on canvas. Sherri Silverman. 2015. 10" x 8". Cherry blossoms appeared on their own in this absract scene of flowing waterfalls. I found that amusing, since I 'm using tradtional Japanese materials and techniques but did not plan any of the imagery.
